The Fellowship is now closed. This page remains to show how the Fellowship process operated from 2011 to 2026.
The Fellowship was open to Australian citizens and permanent residents. Up to $20,000 was awarded for travel and research to further a writing proposal or work in progress. It was not to be used to pay for a research assistant or to subsidise a publication.
The focus was on biography, but extended to an aspect of cultural or social history compatible with Hazel’s interest areas. Preference was given to projects that were about ‘risk-taking’ and expanding horizons, promoted discussion of ideas, and made a significant contribution to public intellectual life.
Applications opened each year on 1 October and closed on 16 November, the shortlist was announced in the following January and the Fellowship was awarded in March. More information and the application form was available on the Writers Victoria website.
Previous applicants were eligible to apply again. When submitting a second application for the same project, any progress needed to be reflected in the proposal. The judges took into account any progress that was made.
